Subsolo - Sydney

Its hard to find a good Spanish restaurant in Sydney that serves Tapas. We decided to give Subsolo in Sydney a try. Subsolo is on the Wynyard side of Sydney city, near the MLC centre. I have been told that Subsolo in Spanish means "The basement". Subsolo is indeed underground, down a set of stairs. The restaurant decor had an almost Oriental/New Yorker feel to it. The restaurant was part bar, but mostly was occupied with tables and chairs. There was a reasonable atmosphere and the restaurant/bar was quite packed.

We ordered four items. King Prawns, Pork Belly, Paella and Portuguese Chicken. 

King Prawns wrapped in Jamon with Quince Aioli (entree size) - $32
The King Prawns were delicious. The prawns were huge. The Jamon (which I thought was quite similar to prosciutto) added a salty kick which really balanced all the flavours out.

Crispy pork belly (entree size) - $26
Pork belly was crispy. There was some type of apple puree on the bottom of each piece. This kind of reminded me of German cuisine - Pork Belly with sauerkraut.
Paella Valenciana with Chicken, Pork Chorizo and Seafood - $39
I was looking forward to the Paella as I hadn't tried Paella many times before. It tasted quite good. The rice was a welcome addition because finally there was something a little more substantial that would fill my hungry stomach up. However, I am still yet to have a Paella that blows me away.

Portuguese Chicken Fillet with Spicy Peri-Peri - $32
The Charcoal Spit-Roasted Espetadas (Kebabs) were quite popular in the restaurant. They were quite the novelty. The chicken was quite tender and succulent. 

Overall, the food we ordered was quite good. I must admit though, it was on the expensive side. For a small plate of food, it would cost around $20-30. 

If you were keen on drinking alcohol, the Sub Sangria ($15) was very popular.

All in all, an enjoyable experience.
